A student of industrial design at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign was the first undergraduate to share the grand prize for the Collegiate Inventors Competition in its 19-year history.

Stephen Diebold, 21, accepted a total of $27,000 in prize money in late 2009 for inventing an improved pointing stick for those who have quadriplegia or who otherwise cannot use their arms. Called the Drop Point, this innovative design is a pointer mounted on a cup that is hung around the user’s neck. A simple movement of the chin enables the person to “shrug” the pointer into a position so it can be used for typing or using a phone.

Typically, those with quadriplegia used a pointer mounted on their head, or they gripped one in their teeth – methods that would require assistance from others to use – and in the case of the pointer held in the mouth, precluding conversation while using the pointer. Stephen Diebold, who hopes his invention will provide a better solution, has since been awarded a patent pending for the Drop Point.

This year will mark the 20th anniversary of the Collegiate Inventors Competition, co-sponsored by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and the Abbott Fund. Begun in 1990, the program now has more than 60 colleges and universities that participate. Individual students or teams of up to four student inventors work closely with faculty advisors to develop and refine their inventions before the mid-year entry deadline.

The rigors of the Collegiate Inventors Competition encourages participants to develop skills and acquire expertise in all facets of the invention business: in addition to refining their inventions and creating prototypes or working models, student inventors are also expected to search the USPTO database for existing patents of inventions that might be similar to their own, termed “prior art.” They must then write a report for the judges on what distinguishes their invention from any inventions uncovered by their rudimentary searches.

The Collegiate Inventors Competition is one of many programs developed by the USPTO to nurture and inspire innovation in children and young adults. The agency oversees and partially funds the National Inventors Hall of Fame Foundation, which operates children’s camps and after-school clubs in cooperation with a network of corporate sponsors.

Comments Off on Choosing to Study Abroad

Most students know someone who’s gone oversees to study abroad but most have never considered the option for themselves. There are many advantages to spending a semester in another country, but is this right for you or your child? First and foremost, what is study abroad? The basic premise is to travel to another country and continue normal studies while also learning about the country’s culture, history and language. Students who study abroad must normally have a certain amount of school credit hours to qualify for the opportunity; must be willing to be gone for either a semester, summer or year; and must typically pay their own way unless they’re on scholarship. Before deciding to take this journey, both students and parents are interested in hearing the advantages of this option. So what are they?

One major benefit in most people’s minds is the opportunity to experience a different culture for a short period of time. The student will have the chance to become accustomed to new foods, arts, music, history, political systems and holidays. Another plus is if you decide to travel to a country whose national language you’ve studied, you’ll be able to gain first-hand experience putting that language to use. The best way to become fluent in a language is to put it into practice; what better way to do that than to rehearse it in its natural environment? Having this kind of practice with a foreign language can look very good to a perspective college, grad school and even to future jobs.

The ultimate way to ensure you’re choosing the right plan is to be absolutely comfortable with the overall idea. If you don’t like leaving home for a couple of days, odds are high that adjusting to studying abroad would take some time. It’s critical to weigh your options. Obviously it’s natural to fear becoming homesick, but most students who’ve chosen to study abroad find that they’re so busy participating in amazing new opportunities that the time flies by and home is a faraway thought.

If you’ve weighed your options and decided the journey will benefit you, be sure to check out your options as far as programs go. Most high schools and colleges offer their own programs, but if you choose to go another route or if you’re home schooled then you’ll want to do plenty of Internet research. Terra Education is one option for those wishing to participate in a high school study abroad program. Regardless of which choice you go with, remember that you’re experiencing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and you should take full advantage of it. Put yourself out there and gain as much as you can from from the experience. Safe travels!

Second Hand Wedding Dresses – Why Its the Better Choice

Comments Off on Second Hand Wedding Dresses – Why Its the Better Choice

Spending thousands & thousands of dollars on an expensive wedding dress is just stupid, plain & simple. That fact is doubly so when you consider all of the second hand wedding dresses that are ALWAYS available to you and me.

If you’re a millionaire with tons of cash to burn, obviously you can do and/or buy whatever you want. However, if you’re planning a wedding on a budget — which is likely the case — an expensive, top-of-the-line, designer wedding gown just isn’t a viable option. The smart brides know this, which is why they will always choose second hand wedding dresses.

The More-Than-Possible Savings

When you stop to think of the savings potential from this decision, it’s truly mind numbing. A new, designer wedding gown can cost anywhere from a not-so-low $4500 to a whopping $10,000 or more. Compare that immense figure to the cost of a second hand wedding dress — which should cost substantially less than $1500 — and it’s really a no-brainer.

Here’s something to wrap your mind around: If you were to wear your mother’s or grandmother’s wedding gown, the expense would be… NOTHING! Just imagine the amount of cash you could save by getting a FREE wedding dress!

Places to Look

– Family. As mentioned above, your mother, grandmother, or other female relative is an excellent start when searching for second hand wedding dresses.

– Antique Stores. Such a place is worth a few minutes of browsing, however unlikely it may seem to you. If you do find a gown here, not only will it be cheap, it’ll be traditional too.

– Thrift Stores. Don’t scoff at this idea, as it’s a great way to find cheap wedding dresses when you’re on a budget. Visit a few thrift shops and/or used clothes stores in the area and see if anything catches your eye.

Why You Shouldn’t Be Picky

It’s important to avoid being overly picky. Why? Because these are second hand wedding dresses you’re looking through, NOT newly designed ones. The more important reason, though, is that any dress you find can be cheaply altered to match your size, style, as well as your wedding theme.

With the money you saved by choosing to wear a second hand gown, it’ll be incredibly easy to find & hire a good seamstress to make the necessary changes. Remember, with the right changes & modifications, a two hundred dollar dress can easily be given the look & feel of a two THOUSAND dollar gown.

If you still don’t know why smart brides wear second hand wedding dresses, well, it’s safe to say that you’re probably not a smart bride.

Homeschooling Facts Research Against Homeschooling

Comments Off on Homeschooling Facts Research Against Homeschooling

A lot of research has been done to proof that homeschooled childrens academic achievements are better than that of learners in public schools.

There is, on the other hand, very little research available to proof arguments against homeschooling.

Certain questions that were raised by experts in the education field can, however, not be ignored.

Regulation of homeschooling seems to lack dismally in most states of the USA. The parent has the freedom to teach any curriculum and some even work without a specific curriculum.

Marty Hittelman, the president of the California Federation for teachers, has a problem with the stringent standards, evaluation and training teachers are subjected to, in public schools, compared to homeschooling parents that are not expected to undergo training or any form of standardized evaluation.

According to the California Federation for Teachers, there are also no standards or specific exit exams imposed on homeschooling students, in the California region. This seems to be the rule rather than the exceptions in most of the states. Even though these arguments proof some problems regarding the control of homeschooling by the state, it is necessary to mention that regardless of this, most children being homeschooled still have much higher grades than most of their peers in public schools.

Further than these specific negatives been pointed out regarding the regulations by the state, the rest of the opposing arguments against homeschooling are just arguments and there is no research available to proof the validity of these arguments.

Many of these arguments point to possible problems, that any parent considering homeschooling should definitely be aware of.

Most of the arguments against homeschooling rather has to do with the ability of the family to provide the correct homeschooling opposed to definite research that homeschooling is wrong for everybody.

There is no argument against the fact that there are many challenges for homeschooling parents and children. Before homeschooling can be successful and be of more benefit to the child than public schooling, the parents will have to realize and overcome these challenges.
